PROS
- Very good value: big 82.5 kWh battery and strong standard equipment at a low price
- Wide choice from a relaxed single-motor car to a 3.8 s all-wheel-drive car
- Safe and long-lasting: 5-star Euro NCAP, LFP Blade battery and a long warranty
CONS
- Charging is capped at 150 kW, which is slower than some rivals
- Firm ride on rough roads, and the regen controls are fiddly
The BYD Seal Dynamic is a rear-wheel drive sedan built in China. It is the cheapest of three Seal variants. The Seal went on sale in Australia in October 2023. The Dynamic has one 150 kW motor and reaches 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. It uses BYD’s LFP Blade battery, and the pack cover is built into the floor structure.
The battery is 61.44 kWh usable, with a 460 km WLTP range. A few listings show 510 km, but they don’t name the test cycle, so WLTP is the safer number. The charging figures are the weakest part. A Malaysian spec sheet lists 7 kW AC and 110 kW DC, and a New Zealand listing gives 34 minutes to reach 80% without saying where the charge starts. I couldn’t find any of these in an official BYD Australia document, so treat them as unconfirmed. The 150 kW DC figure often quoted for the Seal applies to the larger 82.5 kWh battery, not the Dynamic.
In Australia the Dynamic costs A$46,990 before on-road costs, or A$51,342 driveaway in Sydney. In New Zealand it is NZ$61,990. With a 61 kWh battery and under 500 km of WLTP range, it suits commuters and small families who can charge at home. Inside BYD, the Seal 6 plug-in sedan is cheaper at about A$39,057 driveaway, and the Sealion 7 SUV is dearer at about A$59,857. Outside BYD, the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 are named as rivals in this budget. The rear-wheel drive Model 3 is the closest match on body style, drivetrain and price. I didn’t pull its specs, so check them against current Tesla listings before publishing a head-to-head.
