PROS
- Very good value: big 82.5 kWh battery and strong standard equipment at a low price
- Wide choice from a relaxed single-motor car to a 3.8 s all-wheel-drive car
- Safe and long-lasting: 5-star Euro NCAP, LFP Blade battery and a long warranty
CONS
- Charging is capped at 150 kW, which is slower than some rivals
- Firm ride on rough roads, and the regen controls are fiddly
The BYD Seal Premium is the middle trim of BYD’s Seal electric sedan, sold in Australia, New Zealand and India. It’s a mid-size, rear-wheel drive five-seater, 4,800 mm long, with a 230 kW motor, and it’s built in China. It sits on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, which puts the motor, on-board charger and battery management in one unit. BYD also makes the LFP cells itself.
Usable battery capacity is 82.56 kWh. Australian and Indian listings quote 650 km of range, but none of the sources I found name the test cycle, so confirm it with BYD before publishing. A New Zealand listing says 570 km. AC charging is capped at 7 kW and DC peaks at 150 kW. One source gives 0–80% in about 43 minutes. I couldn’t find a 10–80% time.
In Australia the Premium starts at A$52,990 before on-road costs, which is about A$57,642 drive-away in Sydney. New Zealand listings show NZ$69,990 to NZ$72,990, and India lists ₹45.7 lakh ex-showroom. It suits households that want a large electric sedan with long highway range, and it’s less suited to anyone who needs faster AC charging. Within BYD it sits above the Seal 6 plug-in hybrid (from A$39,057 drive-away) and overlaps with the Sealion 7 Premium SUV, which had an A$54,990 drive-away offer in early 2026 that has since expired. Rivals at a similar price are the Mazda 6e (from A$54,938 drive-away) and the Kia EV4 (from A$55,042). The closest match is the Tesla Model 3 RWD at A$60,315 drive-away. A European comparison lists the Model 3 Premium RWD at 79 kWh usable and 750 km WLTP, but that’s the EU spec, not the Australian one.
