PROS
- Very good value: big 82.5 kWh battery and strong standard equipment at a low price
- Wide choice from a relaxed single-motor car to a 3.8 s all-wheel-drive car
- Safe and long-lasting: 5-star Euro NCAP, LFP Blade battery and a long warranty
CONS
- Charging is capped at 150 kW, which is slower than some rivals
- Firm ride on rough roads, and the regen controls are fiddly
The BYD Seal Design is the entry trim of BYD’s electric mid-size fastback sedan in the UAE, sold through Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility Company. It has one motor driving the rear wheels and makes 308 hp and 360 Nm. Some listings call it FWD, which looks like a labeling error. BYD quotes 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Seal sits on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 and uses a Blade LFP battery.
The battery is 82.5 kWh usable (84 kWh nominal). WLTP range is up to 570 km for the Design and 520 km for the AWD trim. A few UAE listings give 530 km or 580 km instead, so check the figure with the dealer. Real range in the UAE is lower. One source reports 400–450 km on the highway, and another says to expect 15–25% less than WLTP in 45°C heat with the AC on. Charging is 11 kW AC and up to 150 kW DC. A 10–80% DC session takes about 37 minutes, but that time is a third-party estimate, not a BYD figure. The battery warranty is 8 years / 160,000 km in one listing and 200,000 km in another.
The Design starts at AED 149,900. Premium is about AED 154,900, and Performance AWD is listed anywhere from AED 179,900 to AED 204,900. Sources also disagree on whether those prices include 5% VAT. It fits commuters and people who drive between emirates and can charge at home or at work. Within BYD’s UAE range it sits between the Seal 6 compact sedan (from AED 87,900) and the Han flagship sedan (from AED 199,900). The Sealion 7 SUV (from AED 172,900) is priced close to it. Outside BYD, the rivals are the Tesla Model 3 Standard (AED 144,990, up to 534 km WLTP) and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 (listed at AED 179,900). The Model 3 Standard is the closest match. It costs about AED 4,900 less than the Seal Design and has a shorter WLTP range. Tesla also gives access to nearly 500 fast chargers across the Middle East, which BYD does not match.
