BYD releases Glory Edition of its Qin Plus and Chaser 05 sedans

Byd, the Chinese automaker, isn’t messing around anymore. Traditional gas-powered cars may be gasping for air after BYD, the best-selling electric car brand in the world, made a move. The company introduced the “Glory Edition” versions of the Qin Plus and Chaser 05 sedans, which are surprisingly affordable.

These recently released electric vehicles are aiming to undercut comparable gas-powered vehicles, with prices starting at just $11,100 (RMB 79,800). This could lead to a full-blown pricing war in the popular compact sedan segment in China. This is BYD’s second big move in a year to steal customers away from established automakers. And it’s not shying away from telling the world on social media that the gas car companies are in a state of panic over their new, inexpensive electric vehicles.

The BYD Qin Plus DM-i Glory Edition is the first of the new sedans. It is a hybrid and can go either 34 or 75 miles on a single charge, depending on the battery. That’s more than enough for a normal daily commute. Because of this capability, the market will reevaluate the true capabilities of affordable electric vehicles.

There are five distinct variants of the battery-powered Qin Plus EV Glory Edition, with prices ranging from RMB 109,800 ($15,250) for the base model to RMB 139,800 ($19,400) for the most expensive one. Curiously, the list of included equipment is getting longer even as prices are dropping; this includes the most recent conversational virtual assistant.

With the same jaw-dropping starting price of $11,100, the BYD Chaser 05 Glory Edition finally gets in on the action. With two electric range options—34 miles and 75 miles—and six different trim levels to choose from, it’s perfect for daily drivers. Because of this capability, the market will reevaluate the true capabilities of affordable electric vehicles.

With this move, BYD seems determined to shake up the industry in 2024, when gas engines are still widely used, and the price war alarm goes off. In this “Year of the Dragon,” BYD has undoubtedly prepared the stage for a decisive showdown for the hearts of car buyers. We will see who blinks first in the end.
