The BYD Han and Tesla Model 3 are both electric sedans, but they don’t quite sit in the same pocket of the market. The Han is BYD’s flagship sedan — longer, heavier, and positioned a step above the Model 3 in interior ambition. It targets buyers who want something that reads as premium without paying Mercedes or BMW money. The Model 3 is a compact sedan that built its reputation on efficiency, range, and a charging network that actually works. Han buyers tend to prioritize space, brand prestige within the Chinese market, and BYD’s blade battery reputation. Model 3 buyers are usually after proven range, resale value, and Supercharger access. They overlap in price in several markets, which is why the comparison comes up as often as it does.

The BYD Han EV Long Range delivers around 610 km CLTC — real-world driving typically brings that down to 450–500 km. The AWD performance version trades some range for faster acceleration. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD is rated at 629 km WLTP, a stricter test cycle, and real-world figures generally land within 10–15% of that. On charging, the Han supports DC fast charging at up to 120 kW — functional, but not class-leading. The Model 3 on V3 Superchargers peaks at 250 kW and benefits from Tesla’s global charging infrastructure, which remains broader and more consistent than BYD’s public charging partnerships in most markets outside China.
The Han EV starts around $27,000–$33,000 USD in China depending on the trim, making it genuinely competitive against the Model 3‘s $38,990 USD starting price in the US. Outside China, BYD has been expanding into Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, and parts of Africa — but pricing in those markets is higher once shipping, duties, and local taxes are factored in. In markets like Norway, Thailand, and Brazil, the Han has an official presence with dealer support. In Nigeria and most of West Africa, it arrives informally, which affects parts availability and warranty coverage. This comparison helps buyers sort out whether the Han’s size, price, and BYD’s blade battery technology justify the trade-off against the Model 3’s more established global ownership infrastructure.
BYD’s broader lineup is extensive — the Seal, Atto 3, Dolphin, Tang, and Sealion 06 all sit at different price and size points and are worth considering depending on what the Han doesn’t offer. Tesla’s lineup outside the Model 3 includes the Model Y for buyers needing more cargo space, and the refreshed Model S for those moving up. On the rival side, the XPeng P7 competes closely with the Han in China on tech and interior quality. The BMW i4 and Mercedes EQE are the Han’s natural rivals in the near-premium sedan space in Europe. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is another direct Model 3 rival that often gets overlooked.
The Han brings a larger, more spacious cabin than the Model 3, BYD’s blade battery which has a strong safety track record, and a competitive entry price in China. The Han’s 120 kW charging ceiling is a limitation compared to faster-charging rivals, and outside China and a handful of active BYD markets, after-sales infrastructure is still developing. The Model 3 delivers consistent real-world range that holds close to its rated figures, and Supercharger access remains a practical ownership advantage in North America and Europe. Fit-and-finish complaints on earlier Model 3 builds have followed the car’s reputation even as build quality has improved. The interior is functional but sparse compared to what BYD and several Chinese rivals offer at similar price points.
QUICK VERDICT
The Han is the better car if interior space, blade battery technology, and price-per-feature matter most and you’re buying in a market where BYD has dealer support. The Model 3 is still the smarter pick in markets where Supercharger coverage is dense and resale value holds — North America and Western Europe especially. In markets like Nigeria where neither has formal infrastructure, the decision comes down to parts availability and which grey import community is more active locally. The Han punches above its price in China. Elsewhere, the Model 3’s ecosystem advantage is harder to argue against.
