This is good news to all who have been looking forward to Volvo’s first electric car. As of today, the first Volvo EM90s have already left the factory, and sales are set to begin next month. The 7-seat Volvo will only be sold in China at first, but there is a small chance that it will also be sold in other countries.
After being teased for a while, the Volvo EM90 was a pleasant surprise. An electric minivan with a Volvo badge thought it would sell well in the Middle Kingdom, even though it’s a new market for the Swedish business.
Since EM90 and Zekr 009 are pretty much the same, the job wasn’t too hard either. Both share the same SAE EV platform, which is also the foundation for many other Geely Group vehicles. Smart #1 and Smart #3 are both built on it, as well as Zeekr 007, the newest car in the line, and Zeekr 001, the oldest. Lotus Etre and Emeya also share it. Heck, Polestar 4 is the newest thing that was built on this very adaptable base.

There are a lot of MPVs on the Chinese market, and electric minivans are a new type. They are all competing for the same high-end customer. At the top of that market, the Volvo EM90 costs at least $115,000. It’s not cheap, but it has a lot of nice features. The basic layout has three rows of six individual seats, and it comes with a Bowers & Wilkins 21-speaker sound system. The middle and back rows have a 15.6-inch screen that drops from the top and makes the experience feel like you’re in a movie theater.
The 5,206 mm long Volvo EM90 is sold as a luxury MPV, so the company chose an engine that isn’t very impressive. The 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor only powers the back wheels. It has “royal” performance—it takes 8.3 seconds to go from 0 to 62 mph. On the other hand, the 116 kWh battery pack says it can power the car for up to 459 miles without stopping, which is impressive for a car this size.
Even though the Volvo is very similar to the Zeekr 009, it is made for a totally different group of people. For just $40,000 less, you can get the Zeekr 009 with an AWD engine that makes 536 horsepower and a 140 kWh Qilin battery. Geely clearly thinks that driving a Volvo is a high-end experience and is happy to charge for it.
Volvo’s first electric MPV is made at Geely’s plant in Hangzhou, along with its cousin, the Zeekr 009. The plant makes a lot of different cars, like the Polestar 4, the Zeekr 001, and the speed version of the Zeekr 001 called the FR. It also makes the Jiyue 01, an electric SUV whose main feature is self-driving. The plant in Hangzhou can make 300,000 cars per year.
The Volvo EM90 will soon be available in showrooms, and the first Chinese buyers will get their cars in March. It’s still unknown if Volvo will sell its cars in other countries. For example, Zeekr sold some of its cars in Europe, but the 009 is only offered in China. Hopefully, this means that Geely is making a smart choice and does plan to bring Volvo at least to Europe. But an electric MPV with a good range would be most at home in the United States.
Thank goodness we won’t have to wait too long for the answers. Recently, Volvo stopped giving money to Polestar, which changes its EV plan. That move will be good for both companies. Volvo will be able to focus more on its own EV lineup, and Polestar will have more freedom. Which, once more, supports bringing an electric MPV to many more countries outside of China to make its product line bigger.
