Mercedes made the announcement today that its EQE SUV and EQS SUV models now have the capability of automated valet parking. These models join the EQE and EQS models, which already had the feature. This translates to SAE Level 4 automated driverless parking, which sounds incredibly useful because, well, it would be if you could use it anywhere. But for now, you can only use it at specific locations. You would get out of the vehicle and then tell it to find a parking spot for itself.

However, you cannot use this in any context. The absolutely enormous catch is that this system is only going to work in one location on the face of the entire planet, and that location is the parking garage at Stuttgart Airport designated with the number P6. That wraps things up, at least for the time being. It is hoped that this will soon be made available in additional locations, but for the time being, the only people who will find this to be of any use to them are those who live in Mercedes-Benz’s hometown, own one of the four models that are currently supported by this feature, and need to drive to the airport and park their car there.

Mercedes EQE and EQS SUVs have driverless valet parking.

That has to be the pinnacle of a niche use case, doesn’t it? In any case, if you are one of these incredibly few people, you are going to be extremely pleased with this brand-new feature. This is because parking spots in these types of parking garages can often be quite congested, so you will definitely appreciate the additional space.

You no longer have to look for a spot or park the car by yourself. Parking is taken care of for you. Simply drive to the P6 garage at Stuttgart Airport, exit the vehicle, and then use your smartphone to direct the vehicle to a parking spot that you have reserved in advance. P6’s location right next to the terminal building means that you won’t have to do a lot of walking in order to get to the airport, which is another perk that will appeal to you when you stay there.

To get this, all you have to do is activate it in the Mercedes me app by going to the services menu and selecting it from there. One last word of caution: for some unexplainable reason, Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-AMG models are not included in this warning.
