BYD has officially launched the 2026 Sealion 05 series — a mid-size SUV offered in both pure electric and plug-in hybrid form. The EV version introduces what BYD calls “flash charging,” cutting a full charge down to roughly five minutes. The hybrid version, built on BYD’s fifth-generation DM-i platform, returns a combined range of 1,308 miles on a full tank and battery.
Pricing starts at RMB 97,900 — approximately $14,360 — for the Sealion 05 DM-i. That is a difficult number to argue with for a vehicle at this technology level.

The Sealion 05 EV: 5-Minute Flash Charging and 391 Miles of Range
The pure electric Sealion 05 runs on BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, a lithium iron phosphate pack the company has built its safety reputation on. Flash charging replenishes it in about five minutes under ideal conditions — fast enough to make the stop feel closer to a petrol fill-up than a traditional EV charge session.
Performance is solid for the segment. The Sealion 05 EV covers 0–62 mph in 5.9 seconds and offers a maximum range of 391 miles per charge. For daily use, that range removes most charging anxiety from the equation.
EV pricing runs from RMB 119,900 to RMB 145,900 — roughly $17,600 to $21,400 depending on trim.

The Sealion 05 DM-i: 1,308 Miles Total Range on BYD’s Gen-5 Hybrid System
For buyers who are not ready to go fully electric — or who live in areas with limited public charging — the Sealion 05 DM-i makes a practical case. BYD’s fifth-generation DM-i system pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor and returns just 3.1 liters per 100 km when running on fuel alone. That is unusually efficient for an SUV this size.
Two battery options are available. The 26.628 kWh pack delivers 137 miles of pure electric range; the larger 34.275 kWh option extends that to 190 miles before the petrol engine starts. Add a full fuel tank to either, and the combined range hits 1,308 miles — enough to cross most African countries without stopping for fuel.
Hybrid pricing starts at RMB 97,900 ($14,360) and tops out at RMB 127,900 ($18,750).
God’s Eye ADAS: Standard and LiDAR-Enhanced Options
Higher trims of the Sealion 05 ship with BYD’s “God’s Eye C” driver assistance system as standard. Buyers who want more capability can add a LiDAR sensor to upgrade to “God’s Eye B,” which enables more autonomous handling in urban traffic.
BYD has been rolling God’s Eye across its lineup at no extra cost on several models in China. Whether that holds for export markets will depend on regional pricing decisions.
Interior: Ocean Aesthetics, 2,770mm Wheelbase, Intelligent Cockpit
BYD’s interior design language here follows the Ocean series brief — clean surfaces, minimal physical controls, and a screen-centric layout for navigation, audio, and climate. The 2,770mm wheelbase is competitive in the mid-size SUV segment and should translate to reasonable rear passenger space.
The “intelligent cockpit” BYD references is largely the DiLink infotainment system, which handles over-the-air updates and integrates with third-party apps.

What the Sealion 05 Means for the EV Market
The Sealion 05’s pricing puts significant pressure on rivals across both segments. At $14,360 for the hybrid entry trim, BYD is competing directly with internal combustion SUVs on price, not just EVs. For markets like Nigeria where EV affordability is one of the key adoption barriers, that figure is worth watching — even if the vehicle is not yet confirmed for right-hand-drive markets or African distribution.
BYD’s continued investment in both DM-i hybrid and full EV platforms signals it is not betting on one technology path. That flexibility may matter more in emerging markets, where charging infrastructure gaps still make pure EVs a harder sell outside major cities.
