PROS

  1. 400 kW DC fast charging on an 800V architecture, adding 231 miles in 10 minutes
  2. Official range of up to 500 miles WLTP, with real-world estimates of 315–420 miles depending on conditions
  3. Purpose-built EV platform delivers notably more interior space than the outgoing model

CONS

  1. Suspension can feel unsettled on rough road surfaces, and motorway refinement falls short of rivals like the Polestar 3
  2. At launch, only the dual-motor 50 xDrive is available; a more affordable single-motor variant is not yet on sale

The BMW iX3 is a second-generation all-electric compact luxury crossover SUV, built on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform — a purpose-built EV architecture that shares nothing with its predecessor. It sits in the premium midsize SUV segment and marks BMW’s first full departure from adapting existing combustion-car platforms for electric use.

The iX3 50 xDrive carries a 108.7 kWh usable NMC lithium-ion battery on an 800-volt architecture, rated at up to 400 miles EPA range and up to 500 miles WLTP. DC fast charging tops out at 400 kW, covering the 10–80% window in 21 minutes and adding 231 miles in 10 minutes. The iX3 also supports bidirectional charging — V2H, V2G, and V2L — which is a practical addition for home energy use.

UK pricing opens at £53,250 for the rear-wheel-drive iX3 40 and rises to £58,755 for the dual-motor 50 xDrive, with M Sport and M Sport Pro trims stretching to £62,755. US pricing is expected to start around $60,000. The iX3 is positioned for buyers who want genuine long-distance capability without a range-anxiety compromise — frequent highway drivers, families, and those upgrading from a premium combustion SUV. Within BMW’s own lineup, the BMW iX offers more luxury but at a higher price and shorter range, while the BMW i5 covers the executive saloon space. Outside the brand, the Audi Q6 e-tron and Polestar 3 are the closest direct rivals — both well-regarded but unable to match the iX3’s range figures. Against the Tesla Model Y, the iX3 targets buyers who prioritise interior refinement and European build quality over Tesla’s software ecosystem and charging network breadth.
