Mercedes-Benz GLC L EV Makes World Premiere at Beijing Auto Show 2026

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the all-new GLC L EV on April 23, 2026, the day before the Beijing Auto Show opened its doors. The electric SUV is built specifically for the Chinese market, with a stretched wheelbase, a massive in-cabin screen, and an 800V fast-charging system that adds around 260km of range in 10 minutes.

How Far Does the Mercedes GLC L EV Go?

The GLC L EV carries an 89 kWh battery pack rated for over 700km on the CLTC cycle. The 800V high-voltage architecture supports DC fast charging; Mercedes claims roughly 260km of added range in 10 minutes. Real-world range under mixed driving conditions will be lower, as it always is with CLTC figures, but the headline number is competitive with the best long-range EVs on sale today.

What’s Different About the “L” Version?

The “L” suffix means long-wheelbase — Mercedes extended the GLC’s wheelbase by 55mm and the overall body by 104mm compared to the global version. The result is a 3,027mm wheelbase on a 4,949mm-long SUV. Rear passengers get more legroom, which is the point: the Chinese market is the world’s largest for premium EVs, and buyers there routinely prioritize rear-seat comfort over driving dynamics.

39-Inch MBUX Screen and MB.OS

The dashboard is dominated by a 39.1-inch MBUX super screen — a 14.4-inch central display paired with a 12.3-inch front passenger screen. Both run on MB.OS, Mercedes-Benz’s new in-house operating system, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. A voice assistant called Xiao Ben (小奔, meaning “Little Benz”) handles commands and receives OTA updates.

A head-up display projects navigation and speed data onto the windshield. Front seats are heated, ventilated, and offer massage functions. The cabin also includes a Burmester sound system and a panoramic sunroof with nine adjustable transparency zones.

Exterior: Retro Grille, 942 Lights, and a Front Trunk

The GLC L EV’s front end uses a retro shield-style grille referencing Mercedes-Benz’s early 1900s design. The grille contains 942 individual backlit units that produce different animated effects during unlocking and charging. The three-pointed star emblem glows. LED digital headlights sit below it with adaptive high-low beam switching.

Behind the front fascia, there’s a 128-litre frunk — enough for a carry-on bag, which is more useful than it sounds on a daily driver.

The rear lights mirror the front star-emblem theme. Three new exterior colours are available: Purple Silver, Mist Blue, and Ink Jade Grey.

Chassis: Air Suspension and Rear-Axle Steering

The GLC L EV comes standard with air suspension — derived from the S-Class — that adjusts both damping and ride height automatically based on road surface. Rear-axle steering adds up to 4.5 degrees of rotation, which tightens the turning circle at low speeds and stabilises the car at motorway speeds. That combination is worth noting for anyone comparing this to rivals like the BMW iX3 or Audi Q6 e-tron, neither of which offers both features as standard at this price point.

Powertrain

The dual-motor setup produces 310 kW combined with 800 Nm of torque. It uses Mercedes-Benz’s eATS 2.0 electric drive system, which pairs radial motors with a two-speed transmission for improved efficiency at both low and high speeds. Driving assistance covers highway navigation assist, urban navigation assist, and parking functions.

Africa Relevance

The GLC L EV is a China-market model and is not confirmed for African sales. That said, the 800V charging architecture and the extended range figure are worth watching as benchmarks — they reflect where the premium EV segment is heading globally. Mercedes-Benz already sells the standard GLC PHEV in select African markets, and Chinese-market long-wheelbase models have historically taken 12–18 months to appear in other regions under revised specifications.
