2027 BMW 7 Series and i7 Get Neue Klasse Tech, 680 HP, and 350+ Mile Range — Here’s What’s New

BMW has confirmed full specifications for the 2027 BMW 7 Series and i7, revealing the biggest update to the luxury sedan since the current generation launched. The car adopts the “Neue Klasse” digital architecture from BMW’s next-generation EV platform, bringing it into line with where the brand is heading — while the body and structure carry over from the existing model.

Prices start at $101,350 for the gasoline-powered 740i, $107,750 for the i7 50 xDrive, and $126,250 for the top electric i7 60 xDrive. A plug-in hybrid, the 750e xDrive, arrives in early 2027.

2027 BMW i7: Range, Battery, and Charging

The electric i7 lineup gets a significant upgrade under the floor. BMW switched to cylindrical battery cells — the same format used by Tesla and increasingly common in new-generation EVs — which store 20 percent more energy than the previous prismatic cells. The usable capacity is now 112.5 kWh.

All i7 models now use the NACS (North American Charging Standard) port, the same connector found on Tesla vehicles and now the dominant standard at public fast-chargers across North America. Charging speed increases to 250 kW DC, which BMW says takes the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 28 minutes.

The i7 60 xDrive is rated for more than 350 miles of range on a single charge, with 536 hp (400 kW) and a 0–60 mph time of 4.6 seconds. The i7 50 xDrive delivers 449 hp (335 kW), a 5.3-second 0–60, and a lower entry price of $107,750.

The range-topping i7 M70 xDrive produces 680 hp, sprints to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds, and is rated for 426 miles — while still supporting 250 kW charging.

Neue Klasse Architecture and Weight Reduction

BMW describes the 2027 7 Series as a preview of how future BMW electric cars will operate. The Neue Klasse digital platform replaces the car’s previous central computing setup with a zonal wiring architecture — grouping electronics by location in the car rather than running individual cables to a central hub. This alone removed roughly 610 meters of wiring, cutting the wiring system’s total weight by 30 percent.

The result is a car that is meaningfully lighter despite carrying more technology than its predecessor.

Interior: Screens, Sound, and the Theater Seat

The cabin is where the technology investment is most visible. BMW added a Panoramic Vision system that projects information across the full width of the lower windshield — similar in concept to a heads-up display, but spanning the entire base of the glass.

The center console features a 17.9-inch touchscreen. More notable is the addition of a 14.6-inch screen for the front passenger — a first for the 7 Series. Passengers can use it to watch video or play games. BMW installed a driver-facing camera that monitors eye direction; if the driver glances at the passenger screen, it automatically dims to reduce distraction.

Rear passengers retain the 31.3-inch Theater Screen, now upgraded to 8K resolution with full touchscreen control, a built-in camera for video calls, and an HDMI port for connecting a laptop. Audio is handled by an optional Bowers & Wilkins system with 36 speakers and 1,925 watts of output. The standard system uses 18 speakers and 575 watts.

The car also integrates Amazon Alexa as its primary voice assistant, enabling natural-language control of climate, media, and compatible smart home devices.

Exterior Changes: Wider Grille, New Lights, Matte Badge

The exterior update is more subtle than the interior overhaul. The kidney grille is wider and shorter than before, with integrated lighting that allows it to illuminate. Full LED headlights move into the front bumper, while a thinner daytime running light strip sits higher on the fascia. BMW increased the use of body-colored trim on the front end.

The optional two-tone paint finish shown in press images takes 75 hours to apply and is available at extra cost. At the rear, the taillights are longer, and the BMW roundel on the trunk switches to a matte finish.

Safety Tech: “Symbiotic Drive” Replaces Level 3 Autonomy

BMW’s updated driver assistance suite is called Symbiotic Drive. It uses eye-tracking to determine whether lane-keeping assistance is needed — the system intervenes only when it detects unintentional drifting, rather than applying corrections continuously. It also includes animal detection with automatic emergency braking.

BMW has removed the Level 3 autonomous driving capability that appeared in the previous 7 Series. The company stated that keeping the driver actively engaged is both safer and less legally complex than managing conditional automation.

Gasoline and Hybrid Variants

For buyers not ready to go fully electric, the BMW 740i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six producing 394 hp (294 kW), with pricing from $101,350.

The 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid joins the lineup in early 2027, offering 483 hp (360 kW). BMW has also confirmed a V8-powered variant will follow the hybrid, though specifications have not yet been disclosed.

Availability

Production of the 2027 BMW 7 Series begins in July 2026 at BMW’s plant in Dingolfing, Germany. European deliveries come first, with US market availability following shortly after. The 750e xDrive and V8 model arrive in early 2027.
