PROS

  1. Very cheap for an EV, especially in Australia and Thailand.
  2. Fast charging and V2L (powering devices from the car) on the larger-battery trims.
  3. Nimble in town, with more cabin space than its size suggests.

CONS

  1. Climate controls sit in a fiddly touchscreen, and the driver assists are naggy.
  2. Range is short on the small-battery trims (about 220 km in Australia, 240 km WLTP in Thailand), and Australian cars are four-seaters only.

The BYD Atto 1 Premium (Australia) is the top grade of BYD’s smallest and cheapest car, a four-seat electric hatchback with five doors. In Australia it sits at the entry end of the range, under the Dolphin and Atto 3. It’s front-wheel drive, built on e-Platform 3.0, and roughly 3,990 mm long. There are two grades here, and the Premium gets the bigger battery and motor. It’s also the first four-seat EV city car sold in Australia since the Mitsubishi i-MiEV left in 2013.

The battery is a 43.2 kWh LFP pack (usable, per BYD; one listing shows 47.5 kWh gross) rated at 310 km on the WLTP cycle. Reviewers report 15.5–16 kWh/100 km. The motor makes 115 kW and 220 Nm, and BYD claims 0–100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. AC charging tops out at 11 kW, DC at 85 kW. BYD says 10–80% takes about 30 minutes, though one outlet quotes 30–80% in about 22, so the charge time is a manufacturer claim and depends on how it’s measured.

List price is A$27,990 plus on-road costs. The sources I checked put drive-away at A$31,362 in Victoria and A$31,651 in Sydney. The A$19,990 drive-away deal that started on 15 September 2026 doesn’t apply to the Premium. With 310 km of range and 11 kW AC charging, it suits a commuter or second car that gets charged at home. It’s a weak pick for regular highway driving. Within BYD it sits above the Atto 1 Essential (30 kWh, 220 km WLTP, A$23,990) and below the Dolphin (A$29,990 before on-road costs), and the Atto 2 (from A$31,990) is the next step up.

From other brands, the MG4 EV Urban (A$29,990) and the GWM Ora (A$35,990 drive-away when the Atto 1 launched) are the nearest EV alternatives. The best direct comparison is the Geely EX2 Inspire at A$30,990 before on-road costs. It has a 47.1 kWh LFP battery, 345 km WLTP, an 85 kW rear motor, 80 kW DC charging and 6 kW AC. It beats the Premium on range and warranty (seven years for the car, eight for the battery) but charges more slowly and makes less power.

These are Australian prices from October 2026 and could change. I didn’t re-check the Ora figure, which dates from the Atto 1’s launch.
