The BYD Seagull Zizai is a small electric hatchback from BYD, sold in China as the 405 km Zizai Edition. Some English-language databases list the same trim as the Comfort Edition. It is an entry level A00 car with five doors and four seats, 3,780 mm long on a 2,500 mm wheelbase. A single 55 kW (74 hp) motor drives the front wheels, producing 135 Nm of torque, and top speed is 130 km/h.
This BYD Seagull Zizai (Comfort) is part of the 2026 model year update that went on sale in China in May 2026. The update added an optional lidar based driver assistance package to the Seagull, but the Zizai is listed without it. Overseas the car is sold as the Dolphin Mini, Dolphin Surf or Atto 1, depending on the market. The European Surf Comfort is a different specification, covered in the third paragraph.
The battery is a 38.88 kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade pack from BYD’s FinDreams unit. BYD doesn’t appear to publish a usable capacity. Rated range is 405 km on the CLTC cycle, with official consumption of 10.1 kWh/100 km. CLTC is China’s test cycle and gives higher numbers than WLTP, which in turn gives higher numbers than EPA. No WLTP or EPA figure exists for this Chinese trim. Peak DC charging is listed at 40 kW. The earlier Seagull was claimed to go from 30% to 80% in about 30 minutes, but independent data for the 38 kWh car shows 10–80% taking around 43 minutes at an average of 36 kW. I couldn’t find a confirmed AC rate for the 2026 Zizai.
An earlier 405 km version was listed at 6.6 kW, which works out to roughly six hours for a full charge, so treat that as unconfirmed here. Some Chinese databases list the 30–80% charge time as “30 hours”, which is a data error.
The Zizai launched at 78,900 yuan, about US$11,600 at launch-time exchange rates. The full 2026 Seagull range runs from 69,900 to 85,900 yuan before the lidar option, which adds 12,000 yuan on the trims that offer it. The European Surf Comfort differs from the Zizai: it has a 43.2 kWh pack, a 115 kW motor and 310 km of WLTP range, and it launched at €27,890 in May 2025.
The Zizai suits urban commuters and households that want a cheap second car. The 55 kW motor and 40 kW DC limit make it a poor choice for regular motorway driving or long trips. Within BYD, the Seagull sits below the Dolphin and the Yuan Up (sold overseas as the Atto 2). Outside BYD, the closest rivals are the Wuling Bingo and the Leapmotor T03.
The Bingo comes with 31.9 kWh or 37.9 kWh batteries and CLTC ranges of 333 km and 410 km, and starts at RM67,800 in Malaysia. The best direct comparison is the Leapmotor T03 403 Comfort, with a 41.3 kWh battery, 403 km of CLTC range, an 80 kW motor and a price of up to 69,900 yuan. The Seagull costs about 9,000 yuan more than the T03. It is also longer and reaches 130 km/h, where the T03 stops at 100 km/h. Prices and specs are China-market figures as of October 2026, so check local numbers before buying.
