The BYD Dolphin Extended Range is a front-wheel-drive electric hatchback, sold by BYD as an entry-to-mid-priced car in the small B-segment. It is about 4,290 mm long and sits on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0. The Dolphin has been in production since 2021. In export markets the Extended Range is the larger-battery trim, with a 150 kW motor and the same 60.48 kWh pack the Atto 3 uses.
The battery is a 60.48 kWh LFP Blade unit rated at 427 km on the WLTP cycle. The motor makes 150 kW and 310 Nm, and 0-100 km/h takes about 7 seconds. EPA figures don’t apply because the car isn’t sold in the US. Most listings give a peak DC rate of 80 kW and a 10-80% charge in roughly 40 minutes. UK reporting differs: up to 88 kW DC, 30-80% in 29 minutes, and 11 kW AC. Australian material names a 7 kW home unit as the fastest home option, so the AC rate varies by market and I found no single confirmed figure. Reports of a redesigned 2026 China-market Dolphin, with CTB battery integration, a possible rear-drive version and over 520 km CLTC range, come from spy shots and industry sources. Those details are unconfirmed and don’t describe the current Extended Range.
Pricing varies by country. In Malaysia, where the Extended Range launched, the Dolphin line runs from RM99,900 to RM124,900, and the Extended Range is the top trim. New Zealand lists it at NZ$52,990 to NZ$55,990 before on-road costs. South African listings show R588,900 to R599,900, and Thailand lists it at 719,900 baht. It suits commuters and small households that want around 400 km of WLTP range without buying an SUV. Within BYD, it sits between the smaller Atto 1 (sold as the Dolphin Surf in some markets) and the Atto 3 crossover. Outside the brand, it competes with the MG4 and the Hyundai Kona Electric, depending on the market. The closest direct comparison is the MG4 Long Range, which has a similar battery size, a hatchback body and a WLTP figure in the same bracket. Check local prices for both before comparing.
