PROS
- Very low price for an EV with a 380 km range on the GS.
- Blade LFP battery and fast charging, up to 85 kW on the GS.
- Small and easy to park, with a 10.1" rotating screen and plenty of tech for the price.
CONS
- The GL’s 280 km range suits city use only.
- Seats only four, and its top speed of 130 km/h is modest.
The BYD Seagull GS is the higher trim of BYD’s smallest electric car. It’s a five-door hatchback with front-wheel drive and a single 55 kW (75 hp) motor, built on e-Platform 3.0 with an LFP Blade battery. BYD sells the same car as the Dolphin Mini in parts of Latin America, the Dolphin Surf in Europe and South Africa, and the Atto 1 in several Asia-Pacific markets. GS is the label used in Colombia and Uruguay. It’s the cheapest battery-electric model BYD sells. The Seagull launched in China in April 2023 as the successor to the e1, and a second generation went on sale there this month. That makes the GS a first-generation car.
The GS has a 38.88 kWh battery. BYD hasn’t published a usable capacity. Official range is 380 km on the NEDC cycle, against 300 km for the 30 kWh GL. NEDC is a lab cycle and usually reads higher than WLTP or EPA, and I couldn’t find a WLTP or EPA figure for this trim. In China the same battery is rated at 405 km on CLTC, which isn’t comparable to NEDC. One dealer lists a 30 to 80% DC charge in about 30 minutes and a full AC charge in 5 to 6 hours. I found no official AC onboard charger rate or DC peak power, so I’m leaving both out until BYD’s local spec sheet confirms them.
In Colombia, listings for the GS 400 run from about COP 63 million to 75 million. That range mixes new and used cars from 2024 to 2027 model years, so check the current dealer price. One dealer lists a new GS at USD 21,990. In China the 2026 Seagull starts at 69,900 yuan, or about USD 10,300. It fits commuters and households that want a second car for short daily trips. Within BYD’s range it sits below the Dolphin. A larger car called the Great Seagull (4,205 mm long) has been announced for China and is expected to slot between the two, but I found no launch date outside China. Rivals from other brands include the Renault Kwid E-Tech and the Citroën ë-C3. The Kwid E-Tech is the closest comparison in Latin America. I haven’t verified the rivals’ specs or prices, so check them before publishing.
