PROS
- Very affordable, and the Philippine price includes a home wall charger.
- Six airbags and a long warranty (the 8-year battery cover is in the Philippines).
- Compact size suits city driving, with the longer-range EV400 reaching about 405 km (CLTC).
CONS
- Slow acceleration, with 0–100 km/h taking about 14–15 seconds.
- Small 230 L boot and only 120 mm ground clearance (Philippine figure).
The BYD Seagull EV300 is BYD’s cheapest passenger EV: a four-seat A-segment hatchback, 3,780 mm long on a 2,500 mm wheelbase. One front motor makes 75 hp (55 kW) and 135 Nm, driving the front wheels. It sits on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 with a Blade LFP battery and went on sale in China in April 2023 for under $11,000. “EV300” didn’t show up as an official trim name in anything I found, so I’m reading it as the 300 km, 30 kWh version.
The pack is 30.08 kWh, rated 305 km on CLTC and NEDC, both of which run optimistic. A Canadian retailer lists the same 305 km as WLTP, but nothing else supports that. Usable capacity isn’t published. AC charging is 6.6 kW; in the Philippines a 7 kW wall box fills it in about five hours. DC charging is quoted at 30 to 80% in roughly 30 minutes. The only measured data I found is for the 38 kWh car, which peaks at 40 kW and takes 43 minutes for 10 to 80%. For the 30 kWh pack I couldn’t confirm a peak rate or a 10 to 80% time. One Canadian listing says 65 kW, which doesn’t match the 40 kW figure.
China price: 73,800 CNY (about $10,700). The Philippine launch price was P898,000, including a portable charger and a 7 kW wall box, and BYD’s local site now shows P968,000. A Canadian listing expects CAD 22,000 to 25,000, though the car hasn’t arrived yet. It fits commuters and second-car households with short daily distances and a place to charge at home. On longer trips, 40 kW-class DC charging will feel slow. Within BYD’s Ocean series it sits below the Dolphin and Seal. Outside the brand, the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV are the obvious rivals, and the Wuling Bingo is the nearest match on price, at P983,000 against the Seagull’s P898,000 launch price in the Philippines.
