China’s Best-Selling Wholesale Passenger Vehicle Ranking – September 2025 (Tesla Leads Again)

According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the Tesla Model Y sold 59,907 passenger cars in September 2025, making it the top-selling wholesale passenger vehicle in China.

Next in line were the Geely Geome Xingyuan and Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, which came in second and third place, respectively, with over 50,000 units sold.

In September, China’s total passenger vehicle wholesale volume was 2.803 million, up 13% month over month and 12.4% year over year.

  • Sedans: 1.129 million units (+7.9% YoY)

  • SUVs: 1.561 million units (+15.4% YoY)

  • MPVs: 112,000 units (+19% YoY)

 NEVs Dominate the Rankings

Thirteen of the top twenty-five models were new energy vehicles (NEVs).
In September, the passenger NEV wholesale volume was 1.50 million units, up 15.9% month over month and 22.4% year over year.
The total NEV wholesale volume from January to September 2025 was 10.44 million units, demonstrating the rapid expansion of the Chinese EV market.

The top three carmakers dominating China’s wholesale passenger vehicle market were:

  • BYD: 393,000 units (↓5.9% YoY) — 14% market share

  • Geely: 273,000 units (↓35.2% YoY) — 9.7% market share

  • Chery: 269,000 units (↓13.5% YoY) — 9.6% market share

Driven by local demand and electric innovation, these three automakers continue to influence China’s rapidly changing automotive landscape.

The fact that the Tesla Model Y is still the top-selling wholesale passenger car in China indicates that the market for electric cars is still growing. China’s strong dominance in both traditional and new energy passenger cars is demonstrated by the fact that BYD, Geely, and Chery continue to be the top producers in the country.
