HX Expeditions Launches New Silent Science Boats to Protect Marine Life in Polar Regions

A significant step toward quieter and cleaner ocean exploration has been taken with the introduction of two new Silent Science Boats by HX Expeditions. By significantly lowering underwater noise pollution, these all-electric ships are safeguarding delicate marine ecosystems and furthering scientific studies.

HX Chief Operating Officer Iain McNeill explained:

“These boats are equipped to transport small groups of our guest scientists, our science team, and guests who conduct wildlife observations, oceanographic research, and biodiversity studies—now with only a fraction of the acoustic interference.”

At HX, the introduction of these Silent Science Boats is a component of a fleet-wide transformation. In order to drastically reduce emissions and underwater noise, the company plans to replace all conventional combustion-engine Zodiacs with clean, electric alternatives.

One of the most cutting-edge electric propulsion systems on the market today, the RAD 40 drive system from RAD Propulsion, is featured in the two new MK 5 electric vessels. In the Arctic and Antarctic, where reducing human impact is crucial, they are currently working aboard the Fram and Fridtjof Nansen ships.

According to a press release from HX, the new boats allow for “silent discovery,” which means that visitors and researchers can observe marine life with little disruption.

Dr. Verena Meraldi, Chief Scientist, underlined the significance of sound reduction:

“Sound pollution is one of the most underestimated environmental impacts in polar regions. For wildlife under the surface, especially whales, noise can mean the difference between thriving and struggling. With these Silent Science Boats added to our hybrid-electric ships, we’re reducing our environmental footprint in the places that need it most.”

The new ships ensure environmentally responsible operations by adhering to the rules set forth by the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO).

One of HX’s guest researchers, marine scientist Dr. Ari Friedlaender, commended the breakthrough:

“Conducting research from HX’s new electric Zodiacs will transform the way I can study whales in Antarctica—it’s a game-changer for science in these remote environments.”

Sam Pickering, head of products at RAD Propulsion, added:

“We’re proud to supply our RAD 40 power consoles for the MK 5 vessels, enabling fully electric operation in some of the world’s most sensitive and remote environments.”

With the introduction of its Silent Science Boats, HX Expeditions is pioneering a future where scientific discovery and environmental preservation go hand in hand.
