XPeng GX Debuts at Beijing Auto Show With 985-Mile Range and $58,000 Price Tag

XPeng has unveiled its new flagship SUV, the GX, at the 2025 Beijing Auto Show. It starts at RMB 399,800 — roughly $58,000 — and comes in two versions: a pure electric and an extended-range hybrid. The extended-range version offers a combined total of 985 miles, which is one of the longest ranges of any electric SUV currently on sale.

The GX is XPeng’s most ambitious vehicle to date, and the company is positioning it directly against premium Chinese rivals like the Li Auto L9 and NIO ES8.

Size and Design

At 5,265 mm long with a 3,115 mm wheelbase, the XPeng GX is larger than a Range Rover. Despite its size, it has a drag coefficient of just 0.255 — better than many smaller cars — and rides on 22-inch wheels.

The exterior has a boxy, upright look that is popular in the luxury SUV segment.

Interior and Comfort

The GX seats six across three rows, with two seats in each row. Key interior highlights include:

  • Self-closing doors — no slamming required
  • 180-degree reclining front passenger seat
  • AI-controlled privacy glass that dims on demand
  • Built-in refrigerator for the cabin
  • Trunk space for six large suitcases with all seats occupied

Range and Charging

Pure Electric Version The battery-only GX uses an 800V architecture with XPeng’s 5C supercharging. On a full charge, it can travel up to 466 miles. Dual motors provide all-wheel drive as standard.

Extended-Range Version (EREV) This model can cover 267 miles on battery alone. A small petrol engine acts as an onboard generator, and together the two systems deliver a total range of 985 miles. All-wheel drive is also standard on this variant.

Self-Driving Hardware

XPeng calls the GX its first “robotaxi-ready” vehicle. It runs on four proprietary AI chips and uses a steer-by-wire system developed with Bosch — meaning there is no mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. The AI controls steering directly through software.

The car can detect and avoid crashes at speeds up to 93 mph, including on ice and snow.

Safety

XPeng describes the GX’s safety architecture as “aviation-grade.” If one steering or braking system fails, five additional backup layers take over. Automatic emergency braking is standard across all speeds.

Special Paint Option

An optional paint finish called “Kunlun Cloud Realm” is applied in 15 layers, each 230 micrometers thick. XPeng says the result is a depth of color more commonly seen on cars costing above $200,000.

Competition and Context

The GX is XPeng’s second attempt at the premium SUV market after the G9 struggled to gain traction. At $58,000, it is competitively priced by global standards, but in China’s crowded EV market, some analysts consider the price aggressive.

XPeng is also developing humanoid robots, eVTOL aircraft, and autonomous taxi services. The GX feeds directly into that strategy — it is built to function as a robotaxi once Chinese regulators approve full self-driving.

Deliveries in China have already begun.
