PROS

  1. Battery swap cuts refuel time to seconds, keeping riders productive across a full working day without range anxiety.
  2. Running costs drop 30–50% versus a petrol motorcycle.
  3. Built-in GPS, geofencing, and real-time diagnostics via a 5-inch LED display add a layer of fleet management capability

CONS

  1. Home charging isn't an option — all swaps happen at Spiro's designated stations
  2. At roughly $1,500, the entry price is at least almost double what a new petrol motorcycle costs in Nigeria

The Spiro Ekon 450M1 is a commercially focused electric motorcycle built by Spiro, a Pan-African EV company operating across Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. It is positioned as Nigeria’s first electric Okada — a direct replacement for the petrol-powered motorcycle taxis that dominate urban transport on the continent. It weighs 105 kg, sits at a seat height of 795 mm, and offers approximately 180 mm of ground clearance, placing it firmly in the urban commuter and commercial two-wheeler segment.

The 450M1 runs a 4.5 kW continuous motor with a peak output of 9 kW, a top speed below 85 km/h, and a rated range of up to 80 km per charge. The battery is lithium-ion and designed around Spiro’s swap infrastructure rather than home charging. Riders exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones at Spiro’s swap stations in seconds, eliminating hours of downtime. For those who do charge from a socket, a full recharge takes under an hour.

In Nigeria, the 450M1 is priced between ₦1.3 million and ₦1.5 million, with financing and lease-to-own options available through Spiro outlets. It suits boda-boda operators, dispatch riders, and last-mile delivery drivers who need to keep the bike running across full shifts without long charging stops. Within Spiro’s own lineup, it sits alongside the Ekon 450M2  and the older Commando, which delivered 6.5 kW and a 40 km range per battery. Alternatives in the same space include the Roam Air and the Ampersand electric motorcycle, both targeting boda-boda operators in East Africa. Compared directly to the Roam Air, the 450M1 has a comparable range but relies entirely on Spiro’s proprietary swap network rather than offering home charging as an option.
