PROS

  1. Battery swap infrastructure already operational across 25+ districts in Rwanda
  2. Sub-one-hour charge time on conventional power gives flexibility where swap stations aren't accessible
  3. Local assembly keeps costs down, with pricing now at roughly half what earlier Spiro models cost at launch

CONS

  1. Spiro has not published confirmed, M2-specific figures for motor output, payload, torque, or ground clearance
  2. Swap network density outside Rwanda remains uneven

The Ekon 450M2 is an electric motorcycle from Spiro, a pan-African EV company with operations across Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and beyond. It sits in the urban/semi-urban commuter segment as a standard-body electric motorbike, built primarily around the boda-boda and moto-taxi use case that dominates two-wheel mobility across East and Central Africa.

The 450M2 runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery — confirmed at 72V by charger compatibility data — with a top speed of 83 km/h and a range of up to 128 km per charge under ideal conditions. It can recharge fully in under an hour, and is also compatible with Spiro’s automated battery swap network, where riders can exchange a depleted pack for a fully charged one in minutes. The M2 sits above the M1 in the lineup, though Spiro has not publicly published a differentiated spec sheet for the two variants.

The updated Ekon models were relaunched at nearly half their original retail price, a deliberate move to align with government e-mobility policies and bring the bikes within reach of working riders. That positions the 450M2 squarely for moto-taxi operators, last-mile delivery riders, and daily commuters in markets where fuel costs are a persistent pressure. Within Spiro’s own lineup, the closest alternatives are the Ekon 450M1 (the entry variant in this generation) and the Ekon 450M3 (the higher-spec model). Outside the brand, the Ampersand electric motorcycle (Rwanda) and the Roam Air (Kenya) are the most relevant alternatives. Against the Roam Air specifically, the 450M2 trades a more polished spec sheet and stronger brand recognition for a lower price point and a denser swap network.
